How to Choose the Perfect Gold Coast Charter Boat for Your Event

Planning a birthday, hens party, corporate event or simply a great day out with friends? Choosing the right boat can make a huge difference to the experience.

And if you've started searching for a boat charter on the Gold Coast, you've probably already discovered there are several to choose from.

After more than 15 years in the charter industry, we've learnt that there isn't one "perfect" boat for everyone. Different groups want different things. Some want a relaxed afternoon swimming and playing games on the beach. Others want plenty of undercover space and somewhere comfortable for everyone to sit. Some want to BYO their favourite drinks, while others would rather have everything taken care of.

So rather than simply comparing the price and number of hours, here are a few things we recommend considering before you book.

1. Choose the layout, not just the capacity

Passenger capacity is a useful starting point, but it doesn't tell you how your group will actually use the boat.

Look at the layout. Is there plenty of seating and shade? Can guests move easily between indoor and outdoor areas? Is there a good central table for food and drinks? Can everyone socialise together, or are there separate areas for guests who want to relax?

Think about your group too. The perfect layout for a lively party might be quite different from a family celebration with young children and grandparents.

This is one reason we have detailed photo galleries, video walkthroughs and interactive VR tours of our Sailing in Paradise vessels on our website. You can have a proper look around before you book and get a realistic feel for the space.

2. Make sure you know what you're booking

It's worth looking beyond a handful of beautiful hero images when choosing your boat.

Video content can give you a much better idea of the vessel, its layout and how different-sized groups actually use the space.

Social media is particularly useful. Scroll through recent charters and look at events similar to yours. If you're planning a hens party, birthday or corporate event, seeing real groups enjoying the boat can help you picture how your own charter might look.

At Sailing in Paradise, our social channels are filled with authentic content from real charters. We also capture photos during our charters as part of our service, so there are plenty of real-life examples of our boats and experiences online.

With AI-generated and heavily edited imagery becoming increasingly common online, genuine photos and videos can be a really useful part of your research.

3. Compare what's actually included

This is where comparing charter prices can get tricky.

Rather than looking only at the advertised price, work out what's included and what you'll need to add to create the day you have in mind.

At Sailing in Paradise, guests are welcome to BYO drinks, and we provide eskies and ice ready for you onboard. If you'd rather have drinks taken care of, we also offer drinks package options.

We include SUPs, splash mat, and beach activities (like pickle ball and cricket).    We have outstanding sound systems with speakers inside and out and an iPad with premium spotify for you to control the tunes. Our crew will also take photos throughout the charter as part of the service.

Depending on what matters to your group, these little inclusions can add up to a very different experience.

The best comparison isn't necessarily "Which boat is cheapest per hour?" but "What will our day actually look like for the total price?"

4. Think about what you want to do on the day

The boat itself is only part of your charter.

Make sure the boat and itinerary can deliver the kind of day you're imagining.  Our Seawind catamarans offer a wide, stable deck space and are suitable for daytime or evening sailing.

One of our favourite features of our catamarans is their ability to pull right up onto the sand at some beautiful island locations around the Gold Coast Broadwater.

Guests can step straight off onto the beach for a swim, SUP, beach cricket, volleyball, frisbee or simply relax on the sand before climbing back aboard.

Likewise, the wide open decks are ideal for viewing the incredible scenic views including islands, beaches, sunsets and the city skyline after dark.

5. Find out where and how you'll board

This is something that's easy to overlook when you're comparing boats, but it can make a surprisingly big difference on the day.

Find out exactly where your boat departs from and how boarding works.

Sailing in Paradise has a permanent marina berth at Marina Mirage, so your charter begins directly from our own berth rather than a public pickup point.

Guests can generally start boarding around 10-15 minutes before the scheduled charter time, giving you time to bring your drinks aboard, get them onto ice, settle in and complete the safety briefing before your charter officially begins.

It also gives you a little more flexibility if guests aren't all arriving at exactly the same moment.

We even roll out the red carpet for your arrival. It's a lovely, relaxed way to start the experience - and importantly, you're not using valuable charter time getting organised before you can head out onto the Broadwater.

6. Consider the crew as part of the experience

The crew can have just as much impact on your day as the boat itself.

At Sailing in Paradise, we've been welcoming guests aboard for more than 15 years, and in that time we've hosted everything from proposals and intimate family celebrations to 21st birthdays, hens parties to polished corporate events.

Our crew understand that different guests want different experiences. They're professional and safety-focused, but also friendly, relaxed and fun. They'll help with drinks, activities and getting everyone on and off the beach, take photos throughout your charter and generally make sure the day flows smoothly.

We're incredibly proud of the many 5-star reviews we've received over the years, but we're probably proudest when those reviews mention our crew. A great boat is important, but having a great team onboard can be what turns a charter into a genuinely memorable day.

7. Choose the boat that's right for YOUR group

Finally, don't be afraid to ask for advice.

Tell the charter company your group size, the occasion, the approximate ages of your guests and what you're hoping to do.

Sometimes the biggest boat isn't the best boat. Sometimes paying for extras you don't need doesn't make sense. And sometimes spending a little more for the layout, inclusions or experience you really want is absolutely worthwhile.

We know Sailing in Paradise won't be the perfect choice for absolutely everyone - and that's okay.

Our aim is to give you as much information as possible before you book so you can make that decision confidently. That's why you'll find detailed photos, videos, VR tours, vessel layouts, inclusions and loads of real charter content across our website and social channels.

We'd much rather you choose us because you genuinely love what we offer and know it's right for your group.

A quick checklist before you book

Before making your final decision, ask yourself:

  • Does the layout suit our group, not just the passenger capacity?
  • Can I clearly see the actual boat through photos, video or a virtual tour?
  • What's included in the charter price?
  • Can we BYO drinks if we want to?
  • Where do we board, and will loading and briefing use any of our charter time?
  • Can the boat access the places and activities we're interested in?
  • What will the crew do as part of the experience?
  • Can I see authentic examples of recent charters?
  • Most importantly - can I picture my group having a fantastic time there?

When you're comparing charter boats, compare the whole experience rather than simply the hourly rate.

A private charter is usually booked to celebrate something special. Long after you've forgotten exactly what the boat cost, you'll remember the day you had, the places you visited and the people you shared it with.
